Gogokid: Inside Perspective From a Current Teacher
I’ve happily been teaching online since 2016. In just a couple of years, online language learning and ESL has transformed and the opportunities have multiplied. As more and more companies take a share of this market, I, as a teacher, have also chosen to diversify.
One of the most reputable competitors in the online ESL industry is Gogokid. I started working for them in 2018, the year that they founded, and overall I feel it was a good career move. Time management can be tricky, but I’ve set up a system to make sure I maximize my availability with both companies I work for. I’m asked, “Why do you work for more than one company if you don’t need to?” There are a few reasons why I do, and I also encourage other teachers to make a similar move if circumstances allow them to.
Who Is Gogokid?
Gogokid is a subsidiary of the Chinese media conglomerate, ByteDance. You may recognize one of its mobile apps, TikTok.Headquartered in Beijing, ByteDance is one of the most valuable companies in the world. Because of this, I feel more secure in knowing that Gogokid has the deep pockets to finance an ESL operation, and can hopefully play the long game in the ed-tech startup competition.
The platform used by Gogokid is much like other online teaching platforms, but what makes gogokid unique is that it is much more interactive. The lessons are structured as “stories”, where an adventure is taking place, and the student must go through the adventure. The adventure is the conduit by which the student learns the target material.
At this point. Gogokid is more focused on younger students. Many students are as young as two or three. While there are advanced lessons, it seems that Gogokid is still in the process of bringing in preteen or older students. It is not uncommon for me to have a student who is still a toddler, barely walking and unable to say more than a few words.
One of the reasons why I like Gogokid so much is that their lessons are less content heavy, and more geared towards student output. Because of this, it is easy to tailor the lessons to the age and proficiency of my student.

Why Do I Work With Gogokid?
More Job Security
The primary reason why I started with Gogokid was to look out for myself. When I first started teaching ESL online, I had worked with a few companies. I then focused all of my efforts on VIPKid because I found a lot of success with them. While I still feel that VIPKid is a very stable and reputable company, I feel that being an independent contractor is always a risky position to take. To increase my own sense of well-being, I started working for Gogokid, and I am always on the lookout for other opportunities.
Taking on a second company also made me more marketable as an ESL teacher. It’s naturally stressful dividing my time between two companies, but I don’t feel so dependent on one company which helps to offset that stress. Now, I feel that I have options. When we give ourselves choices, we are just naturally happier and more well-adjusted.
Keeping It Fresh
A phenomenon I’ve experienced in any field of work during my adult life was the tendency towards complacency. It’s just human nature. We find a level of comfort, and then we have difficulty moving past that.
I found that I was again becoming stagnant. I wanted to learn and to experience new things and to present myself with new challenges. This wasn’t happening with working for one company. Yet, online ESL companies are not all created equal. It takes a lot of energy to look for the one that will fit your personality and your strengths. Gogokid was all of this for me.
What Should You Know About Gogokid?
I may dislike some things, but I have the confidence of knowing that Gogokid isn’t my only lifeline. In my opinion, it’s best to start diversifying your income before you need to rather than when you’re up against the wall. In fact, I work with more than one company because I don’t need to.
Gogokid is similar to many of the other online ESL platforms, but their lesson plans are very different. So is their payment structure and incentive plans. I chose to teach with Gogokid because I wanted something different, but I didn’t want to stray too far from the comforts that VIPKid offers me.
As a relatively new company, Gogokid is still growing and expanding. The company is constantly evolving to suit the needs of their customers. On the other hand, because they are so new, they are willing to look at implementing changes based on the desires of their teachers too. For those of us who work with Gogokid in addition to other ESL gigs, it’s exciting to grow with the company and be a part of their success. Furthermore, it’s reassuring to know that we will still have a job, should the unpredictability of “life” happen.
