What is Formative Feedback?

Formative feedback is used to monitor your students’ learning on an ongoing basis, throughout a course or learning process. This type of feedback is provided to students so they can improve in their learning and so instructors can improve in their teaching as well. Formative feedback helps students recognize their strengths and weaknesses and focus on the things that need attention. It also helps teachers understand where their students need extra help and address issues right away.

How to Give Effective Formative Feedback

Help your students succeed by following these tips:

  • Be sure they know the feedback is coming by communicating well in advance.
  • Make the feedback unbiased, impersonal, specific and to the point.
  • Focus the feedback on a task, rather than on the student or their actions and never in comparison to other students.
  • Create the feedback in direct and immediate response to solving a problem.
  • Clearly explain why the student’s action or response was correct or not.

Formative Feedback Examples

You can provide your students with formative feedback by analyzing their in-class work, homework, tests and quizzes, especially if they’re explaining their answers and thought processes. Other examples include interactive classroom activities like:

  • Pop-quizzes
  • Anonymous polls
  • Two-minute papers or summaries on a certain subject
  • Drawing diagrams of learnings
  • Strategic questioning – this involves answering higher-order questions that require deep thinking, like “how” and “why”

Formative vs Summative Feedback

Formative feedback assesses your students’ progress throughout the course of a project, assignment, or course. On the other hand, summative feedback evaluates their learning after completion of a topic, unit, semester, or some other class milestone. Summative feedback evaluates how much a student has learned and compares how well they did against a benchmark or standard, like a grade. Teachers can take this type of feedback to assess how effective a course was and redesign it with improvements. Examples of summative feedback include an exam, a final project, or a research paper.
